When thinking about what internet service you are going to get it is important to understand what you will be using the service for. The more downloading and streaming based activities you perform the higher allowance you will required.

Below are some of the more common types of activities and estimates on consumption. It is important to note that this should only be used as a guide, watching movies in HD, sending Hi Resolution images via e-mail, making HD Skype calls these are all very intensive activities that will required a higher Bandwidth.

 If you are a big user of Skype this can often be the cause of consuming all your assigned Data for the month. Below is a handy way to monitor how much data your Skype calls are consuming.

  1. Sign in to Skype.
  2. In the Tools menu, select Options...
  3. Under Advanced, select Advanced settings.
  4. Tick Display technical info during calls and click Save.

Important: if you are using Skype 5.2 or above, this function is switched on by default and you can go straight to the next steps below.

Once you have done this, you can see how much bandwidth your video call is using. During the call:

  1. In the menu bar, click Call > Call Technical Info.
  2. The Call Technical Info window is displayed.
  1. In the Basic section, the bandwidth used by the video call for both uploading and downloading is displayed.
